Classes & Workshops
Practical, hands-on outdoor education designed to build confidence, strengthen decision-making, and help you become more comfortable and capable outdoors. Whether you’re just getting started or ready to go deeper, Red Bear Crossing offers a place to learn, practice, and grow.
Wilderness Foundations
Wilderness Foundations is a hands-on weekend for people who want to feel more confident camping, traveling, and responding when things don’t go according to plan outdoors.
Rather than treating survival as a collection of tricks, we’ll build from the fundamentals: prevention, preparation, sound decision-making, outdoor living skills, and the ability to slow down and work the problem in front of you.
What We’ll Explore
- Camping and campcraft fundamentals
- Preparedness and trip planning
- Survival mindset and STOP
- Lost-proofing, signaling, and staying found
- Shelter and thermoregulation
- Firecraft and tinder preparation
- Water treatment and safety
- Knots and practical camp systems
- Outdoor hygiene and sanitation
- Leave No Trace and responsible land use
Who It’s For
This weekend is designed for adults who want more confidence outdoors. You do not need previous survival training or extensive camping experience. Curiosity, a willingness to participate, and a desire to learn are enough.
Location
Planned for a private outdoor venue in the Sandy area, approximately one hour from Portland, Oregon. Exact location and dates will be announced when registration opens.

Principles of Survival
Survival starts before the emergency. Explore preparedness, decision-making, survival priorities, thermoregulation, signaling, water, fire, and the mindset that helps us respond effectively when plans change.
Cordage & Net Making
Turn simple fibers into useful cordage while exploring one of humanity’s oldest technologies. Learn reverse-wrap cordage, begin a simple netted project, and explore natural materials, responsible gathering, and the long relationship between people and fiber.
Bow Drill Workshop
Explore the mechanics, materials, body position, and practice behind friction fire. Rather than racing toward a coal, we’ll focus on understanding the process and building repeatable technique.
More Workshops Coming
Firecraft, knots and lashings, beginner backpacking, navigation, and additional land-based skills are in development as Red Bear Crossing continues to grow.
Learning Is a Practice
Red Bear Crossing isn’t built around collecting certifications or proving who knows the most. These skills develop through curiosity, practice, experience, and learning alongside one another. Our goal is to create opportunities for participants to build confidence, go deeper over time, and eventually share what they know with others.
